If you ever travel towards the tribal areas near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, there is a very unusual story you might hear from locals; a tree that was once “arrested” by a British officer, and even today it is still shown in chains.
This famous tree is located in Landi Kotal in Khyber District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan and it has become a small but well known historical curiosity for visitors passing through the area.
The Story Behind the Tree
The incident goes back to 1898, when the region was under British rule.
A British officer, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, became confused while passing through the area. In that state, he believed that a tree was somehow moving or coming towards him. Thinking it was a threat or perhaps just acting in panic and confusion, he ordered his soldiers to immediately “arrest” the tree. The soldiers followed the order and chained the tree, treating it as if it were a real person or criminal. A guard was also placed near it, as if it had committed a serious offence.
What You Can See Today
Even after more than a hundred years, the tree is still standing in the same place with iron chains wrapped around its trunk. A small signboard near it explains that it is the “arrested tree” and visitors often stop to see it.
Today it is no longer seen as a punishment, but more of a historical curiosity that reminds people of a strange and unusual moment from the past.
